Ingredients
Cake Mix
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
Assembly
- 12-14 mini waffle cones
- ¾ cup chocolate frosting
- Rainbow sprinkles
Chocolate Coating
- 10 ounces white melting chocolate
- 10 ounces milk melting chocolate
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake: Follow the instructions on the chocolate cake mix box to prepare and bake the cake. Allow it to cool completely to room temperature before proceeding.
- Crumble and Mix: Break the cooled cake into small crumbs in a large bowl. Add the chocolate frosting and mix thoroughly until the mixture holds together like a thick dough, suitable for rolling.
- Form Cake Balls: Shape the mixture into 12 to 14 equal-sized balls. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes so they firm up and hold their shape.
- Melt the Chocolates: In separate microwave-safe bowls, melt the white melting chocolate and milk melting chocolate. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth and fully melted.
- Attach Cones: Dip the open end of each mini waffle cone into the melted chocolate, then gently press it onto one of the frozen cake balls. Allow these to set until the chocolate firms, securing the cone to the cake ball.
- Coat Cake Pops: Holding the cone side up, dip each cake ball portion into either the melted white or milk chocolate coating completely, covering the cake ball with a smooth layer of chocolate.
- Create Melted Look and Decorate: Place the dipped cake pops back on the tray and press down slightly on the top to create a ‘melted’ ice cream effect. While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle rainbow sprinkles for a colorful, festive finish.
- Set the Cake Pops: Freeze the decorated cake pops for an additional 10 minutes to allow the chocolate coating to set firmly. Serve chilled and enjoy this fun and delicious dessert!
Notes
- Use mini waffle cones for an authentic ice cream cone look and manageable size.
- Make sure the cake is completely cooled before mixing to avoid melting the frosting.
- Work quickly when dipping in chocolate to prevent the cake balls from warming and losing shape.
- If you don’t have melting chocolates, use chocolate chips with a small amount of vegetable oil to achieve a smooth melt.
- Store cake pops in the refrigerator until ready to serve to maintain freshness and shape.
