Description

This Warm Apple Compote Topping is a delicious, spiced apple mixture perfect for enhancing pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or yogurt. Made with a blend of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples, simmered with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves, this compote offers a cozy, sweet, and tangy flavor that’s easy to prepare and versatile for many dishes.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 5 to 6 large apples (about 4 cups diced; Honeycrisp and Granny Smith work well together)

Compote Mixture

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and dice the apples into 1/2-inch chunks. Optionally, leave some peel on for added texture.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Place the diced apples into a medium saucepan. Add water, brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and salt. Stir well to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Simmer the Compote: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally during simmering until the apples are tender and the liquid thickens into a syrupy sauce.
  4. Serve and Store: Remove the compote from heat. Serve it warm over pancakes, waffles, or oatmeal. To store, allow the compote to cool, then transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1 week.

Notes

  • Leaving some apple peel on adds extra texture to the compote.
  • You can substitute apples with other firm fruits like pears if desired.
  • The compote thickens further upon cooling.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated and consume within one week for best flavor.
  • Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave before serving.
