Description

This creamy Oreo Buttercream recipe combines classic buttercream frosting with crushed Oreo cookies to create a rich, smooth, and flavorful frosting perfect for cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. Made with just five simple ingredients, this easy-to-make frosting can be whipped up in minutes for a decadent treat.

Ingredients

Buttercream Base

  • 5 sticks (2½ cups) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3-6 tablespoons milk

Oreo Add-ins

  • 3 cups Oreo crumbs (about 30 Oreos)
  • Extra Oreo crumbs for garnish
  • Mini Oreo cookies for garnish

Instructions

  1. Beat the Butter: In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a wire whisk attachment, beat the room temperature unsalted butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add Sugar in Two Batches: Gradually add 4 cups of powdered sugar, starting on low speed and increasing to high, mixing until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing. Add the vanilla extract, then the remaining 4 cups of powdered sugar, and continue mixing starting on low and increasing to high until fully combined.
  3. Mix in Oreo Crumbs: Add the Oreo crumbs to the buttercream mixture and blend until evenly incorporated and smooth.
  4. Adjust Consistency with Milk: Add milk one tablespoon at a time, mixing after each addition, until you reach your desired smoothness and consistency for spreading or piping.
  5. Use or Store: Use the frosting immediately, or cover and refrigerate it for up to three days.
  6. Adjust Texture if Needed: For a firmer frosting, gradually add more powdered sugar by ¼ cup increments. For a softer frosting, add additional milk a tablespoon at a time.
  7. Refrigerated Buttercream Prep: If refrigerated, bring the buttercream to room temperature before use and beat on low speed for a few minutes to restore its smooth, spreadable texture.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is at room temperature for smooth mixing and consistent texture.
  • Start mixing the powdered sugar on low speed to prevent a sugar cloud and then increase the speed for better aeration.
  • If the frosting is too soft, refrigerate briefly and then re-whip before using.
  • The frosting is best used within three days when stored covered in the refrigerator.
  • For the best flavor, use freshly crushed Oreos rather than pre-packaged crumbs.
  • Mini Oreos and extra crumbs make excellent garnishes for presentation.
