Description

This Hidden Heart Cake is a delightful and visually stunning dessert perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion. Featuring vibrant red heart shapes embedded within a moist vanilla pound cake, this recipe combines the ease of box mixes with thoughtful assembly to create a cake that surprises and delights. Finished with a smooth vanilla glaze and festive sprinkles, each slice reveals a charming hidden heart that makes every bite special.

Ingredients

Red Pound Cake

  • 1 box (16 ounces) pound cake mix (with ingredients listed on the box, typically eggs, water, and butter)
  • Red food coloring gel (amount as needed for vibrant color)
  • Nonstick cooking spray (as needed)

Vanilla Pound Cake

  • 1 box (16 ounces) pound cake mix (with ingredients listed on the box, typically eggs, water, and butter)
  • Nonstick cooking spray (as needed)

Glaze & Decoration

  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Valentine’s sprinkles (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cakes.
  2. Prepare the Loaf Pan: Lightly spray a 9×5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray and line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal after baking.
  3. Make Red Pound Cake Batter: In a mixing bowl, combine one box of pound cake mix with the eggs, water, and butter as instructed on the package. Mix until smooth. Gradually add red food coloring gel until reaching a vibrant red color.
  4. Bake the Red Cake: Pour the red batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the surface. Bake in the oven at 350°F for 45 to 55 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Cool and Remove the Red Cake: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then lift it out using the parchment paper and transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Cut Out Red Hearts: Once cooled, slice the red cake into ½-inch to ¾-inch thick slices. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, carefully cut out heart shapes from the center of each slice. You can cut two hearts from larger slices if possible.
  7. Chill the Hearts: Place the cut-out hearts on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and refrigerate for 20 to 30 minutes to firm up.
  8. Prepare Vanilla Pound Cake Batter: Mix the second box of pound cake mix with the required eggs, water, and butter according to the package instructions until smooth.
  9. Prepare Another Loaf Pan: Spray a clean 9×5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray and line it with parchment paper having an overhang.
  10. Arrange Hearts: Remove the chilled hearts from the refrigerator and arrange them in a tight, straight row down the center of the prepared loaf pan. Use a scrap piece of cake if needed to wedge and stabilize the hearts in place while pouring batter around them.
  11. Pour Vanilla Batter: Slowly pipe or spoon the vanilla batter around and over the hearts, ensuring they stay upright and fully covered, starting from the bottom and working upward.
  12. Bake the Assembled Cake: Bake at 350°F for 55 to 65 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a cake tester or toothpick into the loaf and by gently pressing the top to confirm it springs back. Tent with foil during the last 15 minutes if browning too quickly.
  13. Cool the Cake: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then lift it out using the parchment paper and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  14. Make the Glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons whole milk, and vanilla extract until thick but pourable. Add up to an additional tablespoon of milk if needed to thin the glaze.
  15. Decorate the Cake: Drizzle the glaze generously over the cooled cake and immediately decorate with Valentine’s sprinkles before the glaze sets.
  16. Serve: Slice the cake carefully to reveal the hidden red heart shape in each slice, perfect for delightful presentation and enjoyment.

Notes

  • You can adjust the intensity of the red food coloring to your preference for a deeper or lighter red heart.
  • Using parchment paper with an overhang makes removing the cake from the pan easier and prevents damage.
  • If you don’t have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, a small sharp knife can be used to carefully cut the heart shape freehand.
  • Ensure the red hearts are chilled and firm before assembling to keep them from shifting during baking.
  • This cake is best served at room temperature after glazing for optimal texture and flavor.
