Description

These Gender Reveal Cupcakes feature hidden colored cake hearts inside classic vanilla cupcakes, perfect for surprise gender reveal parties. The cupcakes are filled with either pink or blue heart-shaped cake centers, frosted with a light and fluffy vanilla buttercream that can be decorated with dual-colored pink and blue swirled frosting.

Ingredients

Cake Hearts

  • 2 Boxes cake mix (15 ¼-Ounce boxes, vanilla or white cake mix)
  • Ingredients as listed on cake mix box
  • Gel food coloring (pink and/or blue, gel type required)

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 ½ Sticks salted butter (¾ Cup, softened)
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 Cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 2 to 3 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • Gel food coloring (pink and blue, gel type required)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Colored Cake Hearts: Preheat the oven according to the cake mix package directions and line two 9 x 13-inch pans with parchment paper.
  2. Make the Colored Batter: Prepare one box of cake batter as directed on the box. Tint the batter evenly with pink or blue gel food coloring.
  3. Bake Colored Cake: Pour the tinted batter into the prepared pans and bake for 16 to 18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. Cut Out Hearts: Once cooled, use a heart-shaped cutter to cut out heart shapes from the colored cake layers.
  5. Prepare Cupcake Batter: Make the second box of cake mix according to package directions. Prepare a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  6. Fill Cupcake Liners: Fill each cupcake liner about halfway with the plain batter. Place one colored cake heart in the middle of each cupcake liner, then cover with more batter until the liner is about ¾ full.
  7. Bake Cupcakes: Bake cupcakes for 14 to 16 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Allow cupcakes to cool completely.
  8. Make Buttercream Frosting: Beat softened butter and vanilla extract together until smooth and creamy. Add 2 cups powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons heavy cream and mix well.
  9. Incorporate Remaining Sugar: Gradually add the remaining 2 cups powdered sugar and continue to mix until fully combined.
  10. Whip Frosting: Increase mixer speed to high and beat for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until frosting is very light and fluffy. Adjust consistency by adding more heavy cream or powdered sugar as needed.
  11. Prepare Dual-Colored Frosting: Drag pink and blue gel food coloring along the inside edges of a piping bag to create a dual-colored swirl effect.
  12. Frost Cupcakes: Fill the piping bag with frosting and pipe it over the cooled cupcakes to finish.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring as liquid colorings may affect batter consistency.
  • Ensure cakes are completely cooled before cutting shapes to avoid crumbling.
  • For best piping effect, use a star-shaped tip or your preferred piping tip.
  • Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • Allow refrigerated cupcakes to come to room temperature before serving for best flavor and texture.
