Description

This easy vegan chocolate sauce is a rich and creamy topping perfect for desserts, made with coconut milk, cocoa powder or chocolate chips, and sweetened with organic cane sugar. Quick to prepare on the stovetop, it thickens beautifully with arrowroot or cornstarch, providing a luscious and dairy-free chocolate sauce suitable for vegan diets.

Ingredients

Chocolate Sauce Base

  • 13.5 oz can coconut milk
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder or chocolate chips (or both)
  • 1 cup organic cane sugar (or substitute coconut sugar)
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Thickening Mixture

  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • ¼ cup non-dairy milk of choice

Instructions

  1. Make the chocolate sauce: In a small nonstick saucepan, combine the canned coconut milk, cocoa powder and/or chocolate chips, sugar, and sea salt. Heat over medium heat, whisking frequently until the sugar dissolves completely, which takes about 2-3 minutes.
  2. If using chocolate chips: Add chocolate chips directly to the pan with coconut milk and stir until fully melted before adding sugar and salt.
  3. Thicken the mixture: In a separate bowl, dissolve the arrowroot powder or cornstarch in the non-dairy milk. Pour this mixture into the saucepan and whisk to incorporate. Continue cooking and whisking for 3-6 minutes until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency.
  4. Let cool: Pour the sauce into a jar and allow it to cool at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before using or storing.
  5. Store: Transfer the cooled chocolate sauce to an airtight container and refrigerate. It will keep fresh for up to one week.
  6. Adjust thickness if needed: If the sauce becomes too thick after refrigeration, stir in some additional non-dairy milk and whisk or shake well to loosen. Gentle reheating can also help to restore a pourable consistency.

Notes

  • Note 1: Use full-fat canned coconut milk for the creamiest texture.
  • Note 2: Using a combination of cocoa powder and chocolate chips can enhance flavor and texture.
  • Note 3: Organic cane sugar can be substituted with coconut sugar for a lower glycemic index option.
  • Espresso powder can be added for enhanced chocolate flavor if desired.
