Description

Delight in these flavorful Apple Pie Spice Campfire Donuts, made by frying biscuit dough in hot oil and coating them with a delicious blend of sugar, brown sugar, and warm apple pie spices. Perfect for an outdoor treat or cozy gathering, these donuts are easy to make and bursting with comforting flavors reminiscent of classic apple pie.

Ingredients

Donuts

  • 1 16 oz. can of canned biscuits (butter flavor or other)
  • 2 cups cooking oil (canola, corn, or vegetable), approximately

Apple Pie Spice Sugar Coating

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice (or cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice blend)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil. Pour cooking oil into a cast iron pan to about halfway full. Heat the oil over your heat source until it reaches approximately 350°F (175°C); ensure it’s hot but not boiling to avoid burning the donuts.
  2. Prepare the Biscuit Dough. Open the can of biscuits and separate the 8 biscuits. Cut a hole in the center of each biscuit and pop out the dough piece; set these aside to fry separately as donut holes.
  3. Fry the Donuts. Carefully transfer 4 biscuit dough rings at a time into the hot oil using tongs. Fry for about 3-4 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until golden and cooked through. Repeat with remaining biscuits and the reserved dough pieces for donut holes.
  4. Mix the Sugar Coating. In a container, brown bag, or aluminum pan, combine the sugar, light brown sugar, and apple pie spice. Mix well to create the coating mixture.
  5. Coat the Donuts. Place the fried donuts and donut holes into the sugar mixture a few at a time. Cover with a lid or shake gently to evenly coat them in the spiced sugar, or toss with a fork until fully coated.
  6. Serve Warm. Serve your Apple Pie Spice Campfire Donuts warm alongside hot or cold apple cider for a perfect autumn-inspired treat. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Maintaining an oil temperature around 350°F ensures the donuts cook evenly without absorbing too much oil.
  • Use a thermometer if available to monitor oil temperature precisely.
  • Frying in batches prevents overcrowding which can lower oil temperature and affect donut texture.
  • The reserved dough pieces make perfect mini donut holes, so don’t discard them.
  • Apple pie spice can be substituted with a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice if desired.
  • Serve immediately for best taste and texture, as donuts are best enjoyed fresh.
