Description

These Air Fryer Flag Cookies are a delightful patriotic treat perfect for any celebration. Soft, buttery sugar cookies baked quickly in an air fryer are topped with a smooth cream cheese and whipped cream frosting, fresh blueberries, and sliced strawberries arranged to resemble the American flag. Easy to make and visually stunning, these cookies combine classic flavors with a fun, festive presentation.

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 2 sticks salted butter, softened
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 2 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt

Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 16 oz whipped cream, thawed

Topping

  • ½ lb fresh strawberries
  • ½ lb fresh blueberries

Instructions

  1. Mix Butter and Sugar: Begin by adding the softened butter and sugar to a large bowl and blend together until pale yellow using a spoon, hand mixer, or stand mixer.
  2. Add Egg: Stir in the egg and mix until fully combined with the butter and sugar mixture.
  3. Add Extracts and Leavening: Stir in vanilla extract, almond extract, salt, and baking powder thoroughly.
  4. Add Flour: Gradually add the all-purpose flour and mix until the dough becomes crumbly but able to hold shape when pressed.
  5. Knead Dough: Transfer the dough onto parchment paper and knead for 3-5 minutes to form a solid ball. If it does not hold, add more butter or an additional egg.
  6. Roll Dough: Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1-2 inches.
  7. Cut Cookies: Using a 3-inch biscuit cutter, cut out sugar cookies from the rolled dough.
  8. Prepare Air Fryer: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil and place 3-4 cookies inside, making sure they don’t touch.
  9. Air Fry Cookies: Cook at 370°F for 4-6 minutes. The cookies will remain pale on top but are done when edges and bottoms are browned.
  10. Cool Cookies: Let the cookies cool completely before decorating.
  11. Slice Strawberries: While cooling, slice the strawberries lengthwise for decorating.
  12. Make Frosting: Beat cream cheese for 3-4 minutes until smooth. Gently fold in whipped cream. Divide frosting, placing half in a piping bag fitted with a small star tip and refrigerate.
  13. Decorate Cookies: Spread a thin layer of frosting on each cookie. Place 3-4 blueberries in the upper left corner, then arrange sliced strawberries across the rest of the cookie to mimic the American flag.
  14. Pipe Frosting Waves: Pipe three soft, wavy lines of frosting across the cookie to create flag waves. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • If dough is too crumbly, gradually add more butter or an extra egg for better binding.
  • Ensure cookies are cooled completely before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Use fresh, firm strawberries and blueberries for best presentation.
  • Adjust air fryer cook time based on your model; watch closely after 4 minutes.
  • Store frosted cookies refrigerated and consume within 2-3 days for optimal freshness.
