Quick to prepare and perfect for sharing, these bite-sized treats combine the ease of refrigerated biscuit dough with the magic of air frying for a healthier twist on a classic dessert.
Ingredients
Donut Holes
- 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (not flaky layers)
- 2–3 tbsp melted butter
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
Caramel Sauce
- 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
- ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the dough balls: Cut each biscuit in half and roll the pieces into small balls, ensuring they’re uniform in size for even cooking.
- Air fry the donut holes: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil to prevent sticking. Place the dough balls in the basket in a single layer and air fry for 6–8 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through cooking for even browning, until they turn golden brown.
- Coat donut holes with cinnamon sugar: In a bowl, mix the ground cinnamon and granulated sugar. While the donut holes are still warm, brush them with melted butter and roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
- Make the caramel sauce base: Combine the brown sugar, unsalted butter, and heavy cream in a medium saucepan and place it over medium heat.
- Cook the caramel sauce: Stir constantly as the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Let it boil for about 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly, ensuring it doesn’t burn.
- Finish the caramel sauce: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt if desired. Allow the sauce to cool slightly; it will thicken more as it cools.
- Serve: Warm the caramel sauce again if needed and serve it alongside the churro donut holes for dipping or drizzle it directly on top for extra indulgence.
Notes
- Be sure to use refrigerated biscuit dough that is not flaky layers to achieve the best texture for donut holes.
- Air frying the dough balls allows for a lighter version compared to deep frying, keeping them crisp without excess oil.
- If the caramel sauce thickens too much upon cooling, gently reheat it before serving to restore drizzle consistency.
- You can adjust the cinnamon-to-sugar ratio for the coating to suit your taste preference.
- For best results, enjoy the donut holes fresh and warm.
