Ingredients
- For the cake:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup cold water

Instructions
Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8-inch or 9×9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Add wet ingredients: Create three wells in the dry mixture. In one well, add the vanilla extract; in another, add the vinegar; and in the third, add the vegetable oil. Pour the cold water over the mixture and stir everything together until smooth and fully combined.
- Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool and serve: Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan before serving. You can enjoy it as is, or frost it with your favorite frosting or a dusting of powdered sugar.
Notes
- If you’re looking for a richer chocolate flavor, add an extra tablespoon of cocoa powder or chocolate chips to the batter.
- For a vegan version, this cake is already egg- and dairy-free, but you can make sure the cocoa powder and other ingredients are vegan-friendly.
