Description

This Upside Down Puff Pastry Apple Tart is a delightful and elegant dessert featuring thinly sliced apples tossed in warm spices and brown sugar, baked under a flaky puff pastry crust. The tart is baked and then inverted to reveal a beautifully caramelized apple topping, making it a perfect seasonal treat that combines simplicity with a show-stopping presentation.

Ingredients

Fruit Mixture

  • 4 cups apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, homemade or store bought

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: In a large bowl, toss the thinly sliced apples with the melted butter and vanilla extract until the apples are evenly coated.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients: Sprinkle the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and cardamom over the apples, and mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Arrange Apples: Spread the prepared apple mixture in an even layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring the apples cover the surface uniformly.
  4. Cover with Puff Pastry: Gently lay the puff pastry sheet over the apple layer. Use a fork to press and seal the edges of the pastry around the apples, then poke several small vents in the pastry with a knife to allow steam to escape during baking.
  5. Bake the Tart: Place the tart in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and fully cooked.
  6. Invert the Tart: Once baked, lay another sheet of parchment paper on top of the tart, then place a second baking sheet over it. Carefully flip the pans over to invert the tart so that the apples are now on top. Remove the top parchment sheet, then allow the tart to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture that holds during baking.
  • Allow the tart to cool slightly before inverting to prevent the apples from sticking to the pastry.
  • Ensure to seal the edges of the pastry well to avoid juice leakage during baking.
  • This tart can be served warm or at room temperature, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
