Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1 tbsp instant dry yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp salted butter (softened)
- 1 egg
- 3 cups flour
Filling Ingredients
- 1/2 cup salted butter (softened)
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp orange zest
Glaze Ingredients
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 1/4 cup salted butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp orange juice
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: Combine the warm milk and orange juice in a bowl. Stir in the instant dry yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture is frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the salt, softened butter, egg, and the activated yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour and mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Prepare Filling: In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, sugar, and orange zest until well combined.
- Shape Rolls: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle approximately 16×12 inches. Spread the orange butter filling evenly over the dough. Roll the dough tightly from the long side, forming a log. Slice the log into 12 equal pieces.
- Second Rise: Arrange the rolls cut side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Make Glaze: While the rolls are baking, beat together the cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and orange juice until the glaze is smooth and spreadable.
- Glaze and Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and allow them to cool slightly. Drizzle or spread the cream cheese glaze generously over the warm rolls before serving.
Notes
- Use fresh orange juice and zest for the best citrus flavor.
- Make sure the milk is warm but not hot to activate yeast properly without killing it.
- For a fluffier texture, you can let the dough rise a bit longer if needed.
- These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated gently before serving.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
