Description

A spiced upside-down apple pie with caramelized apples, warm spices, and a golden buttery crust. Flipped after baking, it creates a stunning and delicious dessert perfect for fall gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 45 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a pie dish or round baking pan and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar over medium heat until smooth and caramelized. Pour into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  3. Arrange a layer of apple slices over the caramel in a circular pattern.
  4. In a bowl, mix granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Toss with the remaining apples, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  5. Layer the spiced apples on top of the arranged apples in the pan.
  6. Roll out the pie crust and place it over the apples, tucking in the edges. Cut slits in the crust to release steam.
  7. Bake for 40–50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Let the pie cool for 10–15 minutes, then place a large plate over the pan and flip the pie onto the plate.
  9. Let it rest a few more minutes before serving warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use a cast iron skillet for extra caramelization and rustic presentation.
  • Add nuts or dried fruit for texture and flavor variation.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a perfect finish.
  • Let the pie cool slightly before flipping to avoid spilling hot caramel.
