Description
A spiced upside-down apple pie with caramelized apples, warm spices, and a golden buttery crust. Flipped after baking, it creates a stunning and delicious dessert perfect for fall gatherings.
Ingredients
- 4–5 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/8 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a pie dish or round baking pan and set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar over medium heat until smooth and caramelized. Pour into the bottom of the prepared pan.
- Arrange a layer of apple slices over the caramel in a circular pattern.
- In a bowl, mix granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Toss with the remaining apples, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
- Layer the spiced apples on top of the arranged apples in the pan.
- Roll out the pie crust and place it over the apples, tucking in the edges. Cut slits in the crust to release steam.
- Bake for 40–50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and crisp.
- Let the pie cool for 10–15 minutes, then place a large plate over the pan and flip the pie onto the plate.
- Let it rest a few more minutes before serving warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Use a cast iron skillet for extra caramelization and rustic presentation.
- Add nuts or dried fruit for texture and flavor variation.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a perfect finish.
- Let the pie cool slightly before flipping to avoid spilling hot caramel.
