Description

Southern Mac and Cheese is the ultimate comfort food, featuring a creamy, cheesy sauce baked to golden perfection. Made with sharp cheddar, eggs, and a rich custard base, this dish delivers a satisfying texture and bold flavor. Perfect for family gatherings, holidays, and Sunday dinners, this classic Southern side pairs beautifully with fried chicken, barbecue, or collard greens.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (divided)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp mustard powder

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta – Boil elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Make the cheese sauce – In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter, then whisk in milk, heavy cream, and seasonings. Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  3. Mix ingredients – In a large bowl, combine cooked pasta with the cheese sauce. Beat eggs separately, then mix them into the pasta mixture for a custard-like texture.
  4. Assemble and bake – Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish, sprinkle with the remaining cheese, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
  5. Cool and serve – Let sit for a few minutes before serving for the best consistency.
