Description
Sourdough Apple Fritters are a crispy, golden treat made with tangy sourdough, sweet apples, and warm cinnamon, creating a deliciously unique twist on traditional fritters.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sourdough starter (fed and bubbly)
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 medium apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced
1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Oil for frying (vegetable oil or canola oil works well)
1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze, optional)
2–3 teaspoons milk (for glaze, optional)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze, optional)
Pinch of salt (for glaze, optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and sugar. In another bowl, whisk together the sourdough starter, egg, milk, and vanilla extract until well combined. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Gently fold in the diced apple and optional nuts. Let the batter rest for 10-15 minutes.
- Fry the Fritters: Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying a few fritters at a time. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat until all fritters are fried.
- Make the Glaze (Optional): Mix powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.
- Serve: Drizzle the glaze over the fritters while they’re still warm, or serve them plain with a dusting of powdered sugar. Enjoy immediately!
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes to restore crispness.
- For a less sweet version, skip the glaze and simply dust with powdered sugar.
- Frozen fritters can be stored for up to 1 month. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes to regain their crispness.
- Feel free to add other fruits like pears or peaches in place of apples for a different flavor.
