Description
Salisbury Steak is a comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich, savory mushroom and onion gravy. This classic American dish is perfect for a satisfying dinner and is easy to prepare, making it ideal for a weeknight meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for the best flavor)
1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably plain or seasoned)
1/4 cup milk
1/2 small onion, finely chopped
1 egg
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 tbsp olive oil (or butter)
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 cup sliced mushrooms (button or cremini work well)
2 cups beef broth (low sodium)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce (optional, for added depth)
1 tbsp all-purpose flour (to thicken)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Shape into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil or butter. Add the sliced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for an additional 5 minutes until tender and releasing their moisture.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce (if using), stirring constantly. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
- Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Reduce heat to low and simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the patties to absorb some of the gravy.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes, spooning gravy over the patties.
Notes
- Ground turkey: Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, adjusting the seasonings as needed.
- Vegetable additions: Add peas, carrots, or green beans to the gravy for extra nutrition.
- Gluten-free: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and cornstarch instead of flour to thicken the gravy.
- Storage: Leftover Salisbury Steak can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Reheat in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of beef broth to loosen the gravy. You can also reheat in the microwave in 1-minute intervals, stirring in between.
