Description

Salisbury Steak is a comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich, savory mushroom and onion gravy. This classic American dish is perfect for a satisfying dinner and is easy to prepare, making it ideal for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

  1. 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for the best flavor)
1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably plain or seasoned)
    1/4 cup milk
    1/2 small onion, finely chopped
    1 egg
    1 tsp garlic powder
    1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    Salt and pepper, to taste
2 tbsp olive oil (or butter)
    1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 cup sliced mushrooms (button or cremini work well)
2 cups beef broth (low sodium)
    1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce (optional, for added depth)
1 tbsp all-purpose flour (to thicken)
    Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Shape into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil or butter. Add the sliced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for an additional 5 minutes until tender and releasing their moisture.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce (if using), stirring constantly. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  4. Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Reduce heat to low and simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the patties to absorb some of the gravy.
  5. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes, spooning gravy over the patties.

Notes

  1. Ground turkey: Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, adjusting the seasonings as needed.
  2. Vegetable additions: Add peas, carrots, or green beans to the gravy for extra nutrition.
  3. Gluten-free: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and cornstarch instead of flour to thicken the gravy.
  4. Storage: Leftover Salisbury Steak can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  5. Reheating: Reheat in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of beef broth to loosen the gravy. You can also reheat in the microwave in 1-minute intervals, stirring in between.
