Description

This Onion Boil recipe transforms sweet onions into a tender, buttery delight. Simmered in a flavorful broth with garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings, it’s a melt-in-your-mouth side dish or snack. Perfect for adding a savory twist to any meal, this dish is simple to prepare and packed with rich, aromatic flavors.

Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet onions (Vidalia or yellow onions)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions: Peel and trim the root end slightly to stabilize. Cut a small well in the top of each onion and add 1 tbsp butter inside.
  • Cook the Onions: In a large pot or deep skillet, add broth, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil, then simmer. Place the onions, cut side up, into the pot and cover.
  • Simmer to Perfection: Let the onions simmer for 45-60 minutes, basting occasionally with broth until fork-tender.
  • Serve & Enjoy: Carefully remove the onions, place in a serving dish, and spoon the broth over them. Garnish with parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftover onions in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in a pot on medium heat or microwave for 1-2 minutes.
  • Variations: Top with, cheese, fresh herbs, or increase the red pepper flakes for a spicier kick.
  • Vegan: Swap to vegetable broth and vegan butter for a plant-based version.
