Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast: Combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix melted butter, eggs, salt, and 2 cups flour. Add the yeast mixture and stir. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  • Prepare the Filling: Combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  • Roll the Dough: After the dough rises, punch it down and roll it into a 16×12-inch rectangle.
  • Fill the Dough: Spread softened butter over the dough and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  • Shape the Rolls: Roll the dough tightly from one long edge and cut into 12 pieces.
  • Second Rise: Place the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and let rise for 30 minutes.
  • Bake the Rolls: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Make the Icing: Beat softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Frost the Rolls: After baking, let the rolls cool for 5-10 minutes before spreading the cream cheese icing over them.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try adding raisins, nuts, or chocolate chips to the filling.
  • Substitute the cream cheese icing with a simple powdered sugar glaze for a lighter topping.
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce for a decadent caramel cinnamon roll twist.
