Description

A classic homemade apple pie recipe featuring a buttery double crust filled with tender, cinnamon-spiced apples. Perfect for any occasion, this pie combines tart and sweet apple flavors with warm spices baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 6 cups apples (about 6 medium), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Crust and Topping

  • 1 double pie crust (enough for top and bottom)
  • 2-3 tbsp butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Prepare Pie Plate: Line a 9-inch pie plate with the bottom pie crust and set it aside.
  3. Mix Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with sugar, flour, ground cinnamon, salt, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly coated.
  4. Fill Crust: Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust-lined pie plate. Dot the filling evenly with small pieces of butter to add richness.
  5. Top Crust: Roll out the second pie crust and carefully place it over the apple filling. Seal the edges by pressing them together, then cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  6. Apply Egg Wash and Sugar: Beat the egg and brush it over the top crust to help it brown beautifully. Sprinkle sugar on top for added sweetness and a slight crunch.
  7. Bake the Pie: Bake the pie at 425°F for 15 minutes to set the crust, then reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for another 30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Cool: Remove the pie from the oven and place it on a rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use tart apple varieties such as Granny Smith for a balanced sweet-tart flavor.
  • Make sure to vent the top crust well to avoid a soggy filling due to steam accumulation.
  • For an extra flaky crust, keep your butter cold and handle the dough lightly when rolling it out.
  • Letting the pie cool before slicing helps the filling to set and prevents it from running.
  • If desired, dust powdered sugar on top before serving for an elegant touch.
