Serve it on whole grain buns, lettuce wraps, or rice for a balanced, satisfying meal. With fewer calories and more nutrients, this healthier version of Sloppy Joes will become a favorite in your kitchen.

Ingredients

1 lb lean ground turkey or chicken

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 cup onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup bell pepper, finely chopped (red or green)

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup tomato paste

1/4 cup tomato sauce

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon

Instructions

  • Cook the Turkey: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, sautéing for 3-4 minutes, until softened.

  • Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.

  • Cook the Meat: Add the ground turkey or chicken to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

  • Make the Sauce: Stir in the tomato paste, tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, honey (or maple syrup), Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and chili powder. Mix well and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes to thicken the sauce and meld the flavors together.

  • Season: Add salt and pepper to taste.

  • Serve: Serve the sloppy joe mixture on whole grain buns, lettuce wraps, or over rice. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Add Protein: For extra protein, you can add black beans, pinto beans, or tofu to the mixture.

  • Spicy Version: Add hot sauce, cayenne pepper, or chopped jalapeños for some heat.

  • Low-Carb Option: Serve over cauliflower rice or lettuce wraps for a lower-carb meal.

  • Extra Veggies: Add grated zucchini, mushrooms, or carrots for more nutrition and texture.
