Ingredients
- 2 large apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/4 cup sugar (for coating)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick rings.
- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the milk, egg, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and stir until a smooth batter forms.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
- Dip each apple ring into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated, then carefully place it in the hot oil.
- Fry the apple rings for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the fried apple rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon for the coating. Sprinkle over the fried apple rings while they’re still warm.
- Serve immediately with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- To keep the batter from sliding off, make sure the apples are dry before dipping and lightly dust them with flour.
- For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend.
- Baking option: Bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- For extra crispy rings, ensure the oil is hot enough before frying and avoid overcrowding the pan.
