Description

These classic Fried Apple Pies feature a sweet and spiced apple filling encased in crispy golden pie crusts, fried to perfection and finished with a choice of a smooth powdered sugar glaze or a cinnamon sugar dusting. Perfect for a comforting dessert or a delightful treat any time of the year.

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 ½ Tablespoons water
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Pie Crust

  • 2 ready-made pie crusts (or homemade pie crust)

Glaze (optional)

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 Tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Cinnamon Sugar Dusting (optional)

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Frying

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a medium saucepan, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Cook over medium heat until the apples are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Thicken the Filling: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with the tablespoon of water to create a slurry. Add the slurry to the apple mixture and cook until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.
  3. Roll Out Pie Crusts: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the ready-made pie crusts. Using a 4-inch round glass or cookie cutter, cut out circles from the dough. Re-roll scraps as needed to make more circles.
  4. Fill and Seal Pies: Place 1 tablespoon of the cooled apple filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and press the edges with a fork to seal. Brush the edges with a little water before pressing to ensure a tight seal.
  5. Heat Oil for Frying: In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the Pies: Carefully place about 2 pies at a time into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes, flipping halfway through for even cooking.
  7. Drain and Cool: Use a slotted spoon to remove pies and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  8. Glaze or Dust the Pies: For glaze, mix powdered sugar with milk and optional vanilla extract until smooth, then drizzle over cooled pies. For cinnamon sugar dusting, mix granulated sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle over warm pies for a sweet finish.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for tartness that balances the sweetness.
  • Ensure oil is at the correct temperature for crispy, non-greasy pies.
  • Do not overfill pies to avoid breakage during frying.
  • Adjust cinnamon and nutmeg according to your spice preference.
  • Glazing the pies after cooling prevents melting and sogginess.
