Description
French Onion Pasta is a savory, comforting dish inspired by the classic French onion soup. This flavorful pasta features caramelized onions, rich beef broth, and a creamy sauce, all topped with melted cheese to create a dish that’s indulgent and satisfying.
Ingredients
- 12 oz pasta (penne, rigatoni, or fettuccine work great)
2 tablespoons butter
3 large onions, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup beef broth (or vegetable broth for a lighter version)
1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half for a lighter version)
1 cup grated Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper, to taste
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Caramelize the onions: While the pasta cooks, melt the butter in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become golden brown and caramelized.
- Sauté the garlic: Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the broth and cream: Stir in the beef broth and heavy cream, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Add the cheese: Stir in the Gruyère cheese and Parmesan cheese, allowing them to melt and make the sauce creamy. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt, pepper, and thyme.
- Combine the pasta: Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the onion sauce, tossing to coat the pasta evenly in the creamy, cheesy sauce. If the sauce seems too thick, add a bit more broth or cream to loosen it up.
- Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and an extra sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For added flavor, try stirring in fresh herbs like basil or thyme when you add the cheese.
- If you want more protein, consider adding cooked chicken, shrimp, or sausage to the dish.
- If the sauce is too thick, simply add more broth or water to reach your desired consistency.
