Description

French Breakfast Puffs are fluffy, buttery muffins rolled in melted butter and cinnamon sugar, offering a classic French-inspired breakfast treat that’s easy to prepare, cozy, and perfect for brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Batter

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 ½ teaspoons Baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground nutmeg (freshly grated preferred)
  • ½ cup Butter, melted
  • 1 large Egg, room temperature
  • ¾ cup Milk or buttermilk (buttermilk preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Topping

  • ½ cup Butter, melted (for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • ½ cup Sugar (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and freshly grated nutmeg, whisking them together thoroughly to ensure an even distribution of ingredients.
  2. Preheat oven and prepare muffin tin: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin to prevent sticking during baking.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk melted butter, room temperature egg, milk or buttermilk, and vanilla extract until well blended.
  4. Mix batter: Pour the wet mixture into the bowl with dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the muffins tender.
  5. Fill muffin cups: Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin, filling each cup about three-quarters full for optimal rise.
  6. Bake the muffins: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool muffins: Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack to cool slightly, ensuring they are still warm for coating.
  8. Prepare coating: Melt butter in a small bowl. In a separate small bowl, mix ground cinnamon and sugar to create the cinnamon sugar coating.
  9. Coat muffins: Dip each warm muffin into the melted butter, then roll it in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.
  10. Serve: Enjoy the coated muffins warm for the best flavor and texture experience.
