Ingredients
For the Biscuits:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup whole milk
For the Sausage Gravy:
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for the gravy)
- 2 cups whole milk (for the gravy)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Make the biscuits: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the milk and stir until just combined. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, knead lightly, and pat it to a 1-inch thickness. Cut out biscuits and place on a baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Prepare the sausage gravy: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it into crumbles, until browned. Remove excess grease, leaving about 1 tablespoon. Stir in flour to coat, then gradually add the milk, stirring to avoid lumps. Cook until thickened (about 5 minutes). Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.
- Serve: Split the biscuits in half and top with the sausage gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add shredded cheddar cheese to the biscuit dough.
- For a spicier kick, use hot breakfast sausage or more red pepper flakes.
- For a vegetarian version, substitute sausage with sautéed mushrooms.
