Description

Family German chocolate cake is a moist and rich chocolate layer cake filled and topped with a decadent coconut-pecan frosting. A beloved classic, it’s perfect for family gatherings, birthdays, and special occasions.

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 2 cups granulated sugar
  3. 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  4. 2 tsp baking soda
  5. 1 tsp baking powder
  6. 1/2 tsp salt
  7. 2 large eggs
  8. 1 cup buttermilk
  9. 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  10. 2 tsp vanilla extract
  11. 1 cup boiling water

For the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:

  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until combined, then slowly add boiling water. Batter will be thin.
  3. Divide batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  4. Bake 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. For the frosting: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 10–12 minutes).
  7. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, shredded coconut, and toasted pecans. Let cool to room temperature.
  8. Spread frosting between layers and over the top of the cake. Frost sides if desired, though traditionally they are left bare.

Notes

  1. Toast pecans in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 8 minutes for richer flavor.
  2. The cake batter will be thin after adding boiling water—this is normal and ensures a moist crumb.
  3. The frosting can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
  4. For a different twist, add a chocolate ganache layer between the cake and frosting.
  5. Cake tastes even better the next day as flavors meld.
