Description

Espresso Brownies from Scratch combine the richness of fudgy chocolate with the bold flavor of espresso, creating an indulgent treat that is perfect for chocolate and coffee lovers.

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  2. 1 cup granulated sugar
  3. 2 large eggs
  4. 1 tsp vanilla extract
  5. 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  6. 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  7. 1/4 tsp salt
  8. 1 tbsp instant espresso powder (or finely ground coffee)
  9. 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional for extra richness)

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

  1. Prepare the dry ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and espresso powder. Set aside.
  2. Mix the wet ingredients: In a separate large bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar until smooth and combined. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until fully incorporated. The batter will be thick.
  4. Add chocolate chips: If using chocolate chips, fold them into the batter at this point for extra richness.
  5. Bake the brownies: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).
  6. Cool and serve: Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes before slicing. You can enjoy them warm, or let them cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For a nuttier version, add chopped walnuts or pecans to the batter.
  • If you prefer a darker flavor, swap the semi-sweet chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips.
  • If you prefer a stronger coffee flavor, feel free to add up to 2 tbsp of espresso powder.
  • For a vegan version, use flax eggs or chia seed mixture, and substitute the butter with plant-based butter or coconut oil.
  • These brownies can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
