With a rich, savory filling and just 30 minutes of cooking time, these sloppy joes make a quick and delicious dinner the whole family will love!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup Dr. Pepper soda
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (your favorite kind)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Break up the meat with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add Vegetables: Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Make the Sauce: Stir in the Dr. Pepper, barbecue sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  • Simmer the Sloppy Joes: Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  • Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Spoon the mixture onto hamburger buns and serve warm.

Notes

  • Add a dash of hot sauce or diced jalapeños for a spicy kick.
  • Swap out ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Try a plant-based ground meat substitute or lentils for a vegetarian version.
  • Top with melted cheese like cheddar or pepper jack for extra flavor.
