Description
Dark Chocolate Chess Pie is a Southern classic with a buttery crust and rich, fudgy filling made with dark chocolate. Dense, gooey, and indulgent, it’s a simple yet elegant dessert perfect for holidays or family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 4 oz dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 large eggs
- 2/3 cup evaporated milk (or heavy cream)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Fit the pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and crimp the edges. Chill while preparing the filling.
- In a saucepan, melt butter and dark chocolate until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla, and salt.
- Stir in the melted chocolate mixture until fully combined.
- Pour filling into the chilled crust.
- Bake 45–50 minutes, until the top is set but the center jiggles slightly.
- Cool completely before slicing to allow filling to firm up.
Notes
- Add a splash of bourbon or espresso for deeper flavor.
- Heavy cream makes the filling richer than evaporated milk.
- The pie is done when the top is set but the center still jiggles.
- Best served with whipped cream or ice cream.
- Cool fully for clean slices.
