Ingredients
- 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes (thinly sliced)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 tsp fresh thyme (chopped)
- 2 tbsp butter (for greasing)
- 1 ½ cups Gruyère cheese (shredded)
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat & Prep – Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Slice the Potatoes – Thinly slice potatoes (about 1/8-inch thick) using a knife or mandoline.
- Infuse the Cream – In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and nutmeg over low heat. Simmer for a few minutes, then remove from heat.
- Layer the Potatoes – Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
- Add Cheese & Cream – Pour half of the infused cream over the potatoes and sprinkle with half the Gruyère and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers.
- Bake Covered – Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
- Bake Uncovered – Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Rest & Serve – Let it rest for 10 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken before serving.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, broil for the last 2-3 minutes.
- For deeper flavor, add rosemary or sage along with thyme.
- To make ahead, assemble the dish and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
