Description

Creamy Potato Gratin with Thyme is a rich, cheesy, and indulgent side dish perfect for any occasion. Layers of thinly sliced potatoes are baked in a luscious, herby cream sauce, topped with golden, bubbly cheese. Whether for a holiday feast or a cozy family dinner, this dish is the ultimate comfort food!

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tsp fresh thyme (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for greasing)
  • 1 ½ cups Gruyère cheese (shredded)
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prep – Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Slice the Potatoes – Thinly slice potatoes (about 1/8-inch thick) using a knife or mandoline.
  • Infuse the Cream – In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and nutmeg over low heat. Simmer for a few minutes, then remove from heat.
  • Layer the Potatoes – Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
  • Add Cheese & Cream – Pour half of the infused cream over the potatoes and sprinkle with half the Gruyère and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers.
  • Bake Covered – Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  • Bake Uncovered – Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Rest & Serve – Let it rest for 10 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, broil for the last 2-3 minutes.
  • For deeper flavor, add rosemary or sage along with thyme.
  • To make ahead, assemble the dish and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
