Description

Classic American Apple Pie is a timeless dessert with a spiced, sweet apple filling and a flaky, buttery crust. This easy recipe is perfect for holidays, family gatherings, or a comforting treat. Discover how to make this beloved pie with Granny Smith apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra special touch!

Ingredients

68 medium-sized Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for thickening)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

1 package of refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade, if preferred)

1 egg (for egg wash)

1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss the ingredients together to ensure the apples are evenly coated.

  • Roll out one of the pie crusts and line a 9-inch pie dish with it.

  • Pour the apple filling into the pie crust, spreading it out evenly. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter.

  • Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the top of the apples. Trim any excess dough, then crimp the edges together to seal the pie.

  • Cut a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape while baking.

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash over the top crust.

  • Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  • Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 2 hours before serving to let the filling set.

Notes

  • To prevent a soggy bottom, consider pre-baking the crust for 5-10 minutes before adding the apple filling.

  • Feel free to add nuts (walnuts or pecans) to the filling for added texture and flavor.

  • If you’d like a sweeter twist, drizzle caramel sauce over the apple filling before placing the top crust
