Description

Caramel Apple Galette is a rustic, free-form tart made with buttery pastry, thinly sliced spiced apples, and finished with a drizzle of rich caramel sauce. It’s a cozy, elegant dessert that captures the essence of fall with minimal fuss.

Ingredients

  1. 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  3. 1/4 tsp salt
  4. 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  5. 35 tbsp ice water
  6. 34 apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  7. 1/3 cup brown sugar
  8. 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  9. 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  10. 1 tbsp lemon juice
  11. 1 tbsp cornstarch
  12. 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  13. 1 tbsp coarse sugar (optional, for crust topping)
  14. 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade), for drizzling

Instructions

In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water gradually until dough forms. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 30 minutes.

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and cornstarch. Let sit for 5–10 minutes.
  3. On a floured surface, roll out chilled dough into a 12-inch rough circle. Transfer to the baking sheet.
  4. Arrange the apple mixture in the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges.
  5. Fold the edges over the apples, pleating as needed, leaving the center exposed.
  6. Brush the crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar if using.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the crust is golden and apples are tender.
  8. Cool for 10 minutes, then drizzle with caramel sauce before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for more depth of flavor.
  • Don’t overload with apple filling to prevent a soggy crust.
  • The dough can be made ahead and chilled overnight.
  • Add nuts or spices to customize the flavor to your liking.
  • Drizzle caramel just before serving for the best texture.
