Description
Caramel Apple Galette is a rustic, free-form tart made with buttery pastry, thinly sliced spiced apples, and finished with a drizzle of rich caramel sauce. It’s a cozy, elegant dessert that captures the essence of fall with minimal fuss.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3–5 tbsp ice water
- 3–4 apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp coarse sugar (optional, for crust topping)
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade), for drizzling
Instructions
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water gradually until dough forms. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and cornstarch. Let sit for 5–10 minutes.
- On a floured surface, roll out chilled dough into a 12-inch rough circle. Transfer to the baking sheet.
- Arrange the apple mixture in the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges.
- Fold the edges over the apples, pleating as needed, leaving the center exposed.
- Brush the crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar if using.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the crust is golden and apples are tender.
- Cool for 10 minutes, then drizzle with caramel sauce before serving.
Notes
- Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for more depth of flavor.
- Don’t overload with apple filling to prevent a soggy crust.
- The dough can be made ahead and chilled overnight.
- Add nuts or spices to customize the flavor to your liking.
- Drizzle caramel just before serving for the best texture.
