Description
Bread Pudding is a classic dessert made from day-old bread soaked in a spiced custard and baked to golden perfection. It’s warm, comforting, and a delicious way to use up leftover bread.
Ingredients
- 6 cups day-old bread, cubed (French bread, brioche, or challah)
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter (for greasing)
- Optional: 1/2 cup raisins, chopped nuts, or chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
- Cut the bread into cubes and place them in the baking dish. If using, sprinkle in raisins, nuts, or chocolate chips.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently so the bread absorbs the liquid.
- Let the mixture sit for 15–20 minutes to allow the bread to soak thoroughly.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Optionally, drizzle with caramel or vanilla sauce, or dust with powdered sugar.
Notes
- Use slightly stale bread for best texture—it soaks up the custard without getting mushy.
- Customize with chocolate chips, dried fruit, or chopped nuts.
- Make ahead and refrigerate overnight before baking the next day.
- Serve with caramel or vanilla sauce for added richness.
- To make dairy-free, substitute plant-based milk and butter alternatives.
