Description

Bread Pudding is a classic dessert made from day-old bread soaked in a spiced custard and baked to golden perfection. It’s warm, comforting, and a delicious way to use up leftover bread.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed (French bread, brioche, or challah)
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (for greasing)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup raisins, chopped nuts, or chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and place them in the baking dish. If using, sprinkle in raisins, nuts, or chocolate chips.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently so the bread absorbs the liquid.
  5. Let the mixture sit for 15–20 minutes to allow the bread to soak thoroughly.
  6. Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving. Optionally, drizzle with caramel or vanilla sauce, or dust with powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for best texture—it soaks up the custard without getting mushy.
  • Customize with chocolate chips, dried fruit, or chopped nuts.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate overnight before baking the next day.
  • Serve with caramel or vanilla sauce for added richness.
  • To make dairy-free, substitute plant-based milk and butter alternatives.
