Description
Black Forest Trifle is a decadent and visually stunning dessert that brings together the rich flavors of chocolate, cherries, and creamy layers. This layered treat is inspired by the classic Black Forest cake, but with a twist in the form of a trifle, making it easier to serve and even more indulgent.
Ingredients
1 chocolate cake, baked and cut into cubes (store-bought or homemade)
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups canned or fresh cherries, pitted and halved (reserve some for garnish)
1/2 cup cherry juice or cherry liqueur (optional for added flavor)
1/4 cup chocolate shavings or grated chocolate for garnish
Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the cake: If using a store-bought cake, cut it into cubes. If you’re making your own, bake and cool the cake before cutting it into small cubes.
- Whip the cream: In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
- Assemble the trifle: In a large trifle dish or individual glass bowls, begin layering the trifle:
- Start with a layer of chocolate cake cubes at the bottom.
- Drizzle a little cherry juice or cherry liqueur over the cake cubes (optional).
- Add a layer of whipped cream over the cake.
- Add a layer of cherries, spreading them evenly.
- Repeat the layers (cake, whipped cream, cherries) until the dish is filled, finishing with a layer of whipped cream on top.
- Garnish the trifle: Top with chocolate shavings or grated chocolate, a few fresh cherries, and mint leaves for a decorative touch.
- Chill the trifle: Cover and refrigerate the trifle for at least 2-3 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Serve: Serve chilled and enjoy!
Notes
- For an adult twist, add a splash of cherry brandy or Kirsch to soak the cake layers.
- If you prefer a different texture, swap the chocolate cake with sponge cake, pound cake, or ladyfingers.
- To make this trifle gluten-free, use gluten-free chocolate cake and ensure all other ingredients are gluten-free.
- Add a layer of nuts, like almonds or hazelnuts, between layers or on top for extra crunch.
