Description

These Banana Bread Brownies with Brown Butter Frosting combine the moist, sweet flavor of ripe bananas with the rich, nutty taste of brown butter frosting. Perfectly baked to a golden brown, these brownies offer a unique twist on traditional banana bread, enhanced by optional walnuts for added texture and warmth.

Ingredients

Batter

  • 1½ cups sugar
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup butter (softened)
  • 1¾ cups ripe bananas (mashed)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Brown Butter Frosting

  • ½ cup butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 15×10-inch baking pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix wet ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, sour cream, softened butter, and mashed ripe bananas. Stir them together until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  3. Add dry ingredients: Add the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt to the wet mixture. Mix just until combined to avoid overmixing. If using, fold in the chopped walnuts gently.
  4. Bake the brownies: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan. Place it in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Prepare brown butter frosting: While the brownies are baking, melt the remaining ½ cup butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking until the butter browns and develops a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Stir in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk to the browned butter, mixing until smooth and creamy.
  6. Frost the brownies: Once the brownies are out of the oven and still warm, spread the brown butter frosting evenly over the top. Let the brownies cool completely to allow the frosting to set before slicing into 18 servings.

Notes

  • Use very ripe bananas for optimal sweetness and moisture.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the brownies tender.
  • Walnuts are optional but add a nice crunch and flavor contrast.
  • Allow brownies to cool before slicing to ensure clean cuts and set frosting.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
