Ingredients
Cake Base
- 13 oz angel food cake
Strawberry Jell-O Mixture
- 3 oz strawberry Jell-O powder
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/2 cup ice
- 1 pound strawberries, washed, stems removed, and cut into quarter size pieces
- 8 oz Cool Whip (half of a 16-ounce container or one 8-ounce container)
Topping
- 8 oz Cool Whip (remaining half of the 16-ounce container or one 8-ounce container)
- Additional fresh strawberries for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare The Cake Base: Using a long serrated knife, cut the angel food cake into 1 to 2-inch cubes. Evenly spread the cake pieces over the bottom of a 9×13 inch pan.
- Make the Jell-O Mixture: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the boiling water and strawberry Jell-O powder. Whisk until fully dissolved. Add the ice and stir until melted to cool the mixture and prevent strawberries from becoming too soft.
- Add Creaminess: Add one 8 oz container of Cool Whip to the Jell-O mixture and whisk until creamy and smooth.
- Fold in Strawberries: Gently fold in the quartered strawberries into the Jell-O mixture without breaking them up.
- Assemble Dessert: Pour the strawberry and Jell-O-Cool Whip mixture evenly over the angel food cake cubes in the pan.
- Chill: Place the pan in the refrigerator and chill for at least 4 hours, or until the mixture is firmly set.
- Top and Serve: Before serving, evenly spread the remaining 8 oz container of Cool Whip over the top of the chilled dessert. Garnish with additional fresh strawberries if desired. Cut into squares and enjoy.
Notes
- Ensure the Jell-O mixture is cool before adding strawberries to prevent them from becoming mushy.
- Use fresh strawberries for best flavor and texture.
- This dessert is best served chilled for a refreshing experience.
- Can be made a day ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
- Substitute Cool Whip with a dairy-free whipped topping to make it vegan-friendly, though traditional Cool Whip contains dairy.
