Apple gooey butter cake is a rich, layered dessert featuring a buttery cake crust, creamy filling, and gooey cinnamon-spiced apples. It’s soft, sweet, and perfect for fall baking or special occasions.
Ingredients
- For the crust:
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- For the filling:
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 cups apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or similar), peeled and diced
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- Make the crust: In a bowl, mix cake mix, melted butter, and egg until a thick dough forms. Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
- Make the filling: In another bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add eggs, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Mix until well combined and creamy.
- Fold in the diced apples.
- Pour the filling over the crust and spread evenly.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the edges are set and the center is slightly gooey. Do not overbake.
- Cool completely in the pan. The center will firm up as it cools.
- Slice and serve chilled, at room temperature, or slightly warm.
Notes
- Use spice cake mix for extra fall flavor.
- Add chopped pecans or walnuts for a crunchy texture.
- Drizzle with caramel sauce for added richness before serving.
