Ingredients
Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Batter
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened at room temperature
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 1 and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
Apple Mixture
- 2 apples, peeled and chopped
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp apple butter
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 tbsp milk
Instructions
- Prepare Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture: In a small mixing bowl, combine 1/3 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Set this mixture aside for later layering in the bread.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat 1/2 cup softened butter and 2/3 cup granulated sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, ensuring a smooth base for the batter.
- Add Eggs: Incorporate 2 eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition to fully combine them into the creamed butter mixture.
- Add Vanilla Extract: Stir 1 and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract into the mixture until fully integrated, enhancing the flavor of the batter.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, combine 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour with 2 tsp baking powder, then gradually add these dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, mixing gently.
- Add Milk: Gently mix in 1/2 cup milk to the batter until it becomes smooth and well combined, achieving the right consistency.
- Prepare Apple Mixture: Peel and chop 2 apples, then place them in a small bowl. Add 1 tsp cinnamon, 2 tbsp granulated sugar, and 2 tbsp apple butter. Stir gently to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
- Layer the Bread: Pour half of the batter into the bottom of a prepared loaf pan. Spoon half of the apple mixture over the batter, followed by half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Press down lightly to help the apples settle into the batter.
- Repeat Layering: Pour the remaining batter over the layered ingredients. Add the remaining apple mixture and then the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture on top. Press down gently to compact the layers slightly.
- Bake: Bake the loaf at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 60 minutes, testing doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for about 30 minutes before glazing.
- Make Glaze: In a small bowl, mix 1 cup powdered sugar with 1 tablespoon of milk to begin. Adjust by adding up to 1 more tablespoon of milk until the glaze reaches a spreadable consistency.
- Glaze the Bread: Place a sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap under the wire rack to catch drips. Drizzle the glaze evenly over the cooled bread. Scoop up any glaze that drips onto the parchment and drizzle it back onto the loaf to maximize coverage.
Notes
- Be sure to use room temperature ingredients for best mixing results.
- Peeling the apples helps the texture blend better; however, you can leave the peel on for added texture and nutrients if you prefer.
- If apples are very juicy, lightly pat them dry before mixing to avoid thinning the batter too much.
- You can substitute apple butter with homemade or store-bought versions depending on preference.
- Store leftover bread in an airtight container; it keeps well for up to 3 days at room temperature or can be refrigerated for up to a week.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute butter and milk with plant-based alternatives.
