Description

A cozy and classic dessert featuring tender baked apples spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a crunchy oat crumble and served warm with creamy vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, toss apple slices with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture into a greased 8×8-inch or similar-sized baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is golden and apples are bubbling.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.
  8. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Notes

  • Add chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts to the topping for extra crunch.
  • Use gluten-free flour and oats to make the dessert gluten-free.
  • Top with caramel drizzle for added sweetness.
  • Combine with other fruits like pears or berries for a flavor variation.
  • Best served fresh, but can be stored and reheated.
