Description
Apple Cinnamon Rolls are a warm and comforting treat that combine soft, fluffy dough with a cinnamon-sugar apple filling and a creamy glaze. These rolls make for an indulgent breakfast, brunch, or dessert, offering a delicious twist on traditional cinnamon rolls.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 large egg
2 cups peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Prepare the dough: In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine melted butter, salt, and egg. Add yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Make the apple filling: Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon, cooking for 5-7 minutes until apples soften and the mixture becomes syrupy. Set aside to cool.
- Assemble the cinnamon rolls: Punch down dough and roll into a 12×18-inch rectangle. Spread apple mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a border along edges. Roll tightly from the longer side, then slice into 12 equal rolls. Place in a greased 9×13-inch dish and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Make the icing: Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Once baked, let the rolls cool for 5 minutes. Drizzle with icing and serve immediately.
Notes
- Can be made ahead by refrigerating the assembled rolls overnight and letting them rise before baking.
- Use your favorite apple variety like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best results.
- For a richer icing, substitute with cream cheese icing or caramel sauce.
- Add chopped nuts, like walnuts or pecans, to the apple filling for extra texture.
- Freeze uncooked rolls before baking for later use. Bake directly from frozen with an extra 5-10 minutes of baking time.
